Similar to Ontario, residents of Quebec will be making significant bets on the Super Bowl this Sunday featuring the Kansas City Chiefs against the Philadelphia Eagles.
As per newly available information from Nanos Research, over 577,000 adult Quebec residents are projected to bet on the game. Total wagers are expected to exceed $14 million.
The sole platform available for Quebecers to place legal sports bets is Loto-Québec’s Mise-o-jeu.
The Quebec Online Gaming Coalition (QOGC) published the findings of the Nanos study on Friday, aiming to highlight the increasing popularity of sports betting in the province and the necessity for the government to create a new, transparent, regulated iGaming market similar to Ontario's, which would more effectively meet Quebecers' demands while also encouraging responsible gambling and safeguarding players from unscrupulous practices by offshore operators.
Quebecers Betting Big
“In the age of the internet, Loto-Québec’s model has become outdated,” said Ariane M. Gauthier, spokesperson for the Quebec Online Gaming Coalition (QOGC). “Quebec needs to modernize its laws to ensure consistent protection for all players, whether they choose to bet on private platforms or with Loto-Québec.”
The QOGC, which includes Betway, Bet99, DraftKings, Entain, Flutter, Games Global, and Rush Street Interactive, along with Apricot Investments, is dedicated to collaborating with the Quebec government and regional stakeholders to establish a new regulatory framework for the province.
How Many Individuals Are Wagering on Unofficial Private Platforms?
The Super Bowl is the most profitable occasion for sports wagering at Loto-Québec. In a statement on Friday, the QOGC cited a report from Concordia University and Laval University indicating that the percentage of Quebecers engaging in online gaming has increased threefold since the pandemic – from 5.2% in 2018 to 15.6% in 2020.
Gauthier also referenced survey findings from Mainstreet Research in 2023 indicating that 73% of participants in Quebec prefer private platforms instead of Loto-Québec.
The study additionally discovered that more than two-thirds of players in Quebec (67%) support the regulation of private online gaming operators by establishing a licensing and tax system similar to that of Ontario.
